Past
Valyrians regarded the day of one's birth as the most important. It was not a joyous event nor one that was celebrated every year like in other cultures, but instead was very solemn affair. They believed that the soul is completely exposed to the universe at the moment of birth and absorbed energy from it. Everything influenced the type of energy that was absorbed, and it wasn't uncommon for a newborn with too much bad energy to be abandoned. This was to be Mikha'il's fate, but he was spared it when a guild of thieves found him. He wasn't the first abandoned enfant they took in nor would he be the last. It might be believed it was out of the goodness of their heart that they saved Mikha'il and others like him, but the truth was they knew those born with a huge abundance of bad energy were highly suited for criminal work. If they hadn't found him, one of the many criminal organizations would have. This didn't mean he was mistreated. In fact, his childhood could only be described as a happy one---especially for a male within a matriarchy society that regarded men as second class citizen.
While the entire guild were extremely fond of him there was one member whom took a real shining to him. She was a female dragon that many wondered why she was a member a human guild. Her kind weren't known for joining human organizations. Some claimed she started this particular thief guild by taking in abandoned enfants and raising them. Others say that she joined it to find Mikha'il--her rider. Whatever the truth might be there was no denying her affection and devotion towards him. She was often found watching over him--never hindering him, but always ready to swoop to the rescue when he needed it. And the gods knew he needed it often. He was the type of child whom laughed in the face of danger, and age did not seem to temper this.
When he was fourteen he started to develop magical powers. This was not surprising as male with magic tended to develop them at the onset of puberty. What was surprising, however, was he didn't develop the negative side affects that came with being a male with magic. Many thought that it was delayed, and that when it finally showed it would be extremely devastating for the world. They suggested they found him a female to bond with. Unlike men, female didn't have magic. Instead, they had what Valyrians called talent which allowed them to harness and control magic from the world around them. Every female had the talent, but not every male had magic. Those men whom did process magic were highly cultivated, and those whom were born within the poorer classes elevated to the higher classes as it was only the higher classes whom were allowed to perform the bonding ritual.
It is believed that if a male isn't bonded to a female through this ancient ritual that he will be driven insane by magic he cannot control, and that would only spell disaster for the world. Mikha'il's dragon quickly alleviated the guild's concern by revealing to them that he was her rider, and that he became bonded to her the very moment his soul emerged within the cosmos. Some took this to mean that his magic was different from the other Valyrian men. Whatever, the truth, the dragon begun to teach Mikha'il how to use his magic. He proved to be a quick learner, and getting into many more mischief with the aid of his powers. When he was eighteen he took his first job, and for two years he made a name for himself within the underworld. He was known to take jobs that others refused. It wasn't due to believing he was better than others, but because he liked the challenge.
When he was twenty he was hired to steal an emerald necklace from Queen Adina. The woman hiring him told him that the necklace was a family heirloom that the Queen had stolen from her mother. He knew there more at play here than simply retrieving a family heirloom, and the proof came in the form of an assassination attempt upon the Queen. This wasn't the first time nor last attempt upon the Queen. Mikha'il didn't fault anyone for trying to kill the Queen. He like everyone else was well aware of the tyranny she inflicted upon her people. What he didn't like was being used as a pawn for someone's political games. Once he escaped the ruse of a trial that the queen had set up to discourage any future attempts upon her life he made this perfectly clear to the woman whom hired him. He told the woman if she attempted to use him as a pawn again that he would personally deliver her name as well as any co-conspirators he could dig up to the Queen himself.
Five months later he delivered on his promise. He revealed to the Queen those whom had played a role in her most recent assassination attempt at a masquerade. During their interaction she confirmed what others had been whispering that after he had used magic to escape from her audience chamber that she had been slightly obsessed with finding him again because he was hers. When he denied her claim over him she decided to prove it by taking him against the hallway's wall just outside the ballroom. He left the encounter confused. He had not tried to fight her off, at least, not as hard as he could had. Did that mean he submitted to her claim? What he did know was that no one tried to use him as a pawn again, and that he began to catch feelings for Adina. Over the course of time these feelings developed into genuine affections and there was some part that hated himself for it. He was well aware of the horrible things she had done.
While he shared her bed, he made no secrets of his feeling towards the horrors she had inflicted upon their people. He tried to persuaded her to take a different course, and there were times when he thought he had convinced her only to have her change her mind at the very last second. Like him, Adina feel deeper in love with him and like him the depth of her affection confused her. Through, perhaps for different reasons. She became more possessive over him, and when she learned that he was dragon blessed she attempted to lock up his dragon just so she could have more control over him. They eventually had a daughter whom died six months later of natural causes but Adina was so convinced that someone had killed her that she refused to sleep for several months after their second daughter was born. Eventually Mikha and Adina's most trusted servant convinced her to sleep.
Everyone knew that Adina's daughter was his. She resembled him in many ways, and eventually she revealed to be dragon blessed just like him. This news did not please Adina. She like many wished to be dragon blessed. It was considered the greatest honor, but jealously wasn't the emotion behind her reaction to the news. It is said that the dragon blessed enter a different afterlife than everyone else, and she feared that once Mikha and their daughter passed from this world that she would never see them again. This wasn't to say she didn't wish to be dragon blessed for reasons other than staying with Mikha and their daughter because she believed having the powers of a dragon could help her achieve her dreams. She began to hunt dragons down relentlessly in an attempt to force one to bond with her.
The only thing she succeeded in doing is single handedly almost eradicating dragons. Mikha'il, his daughter, and the few dragons that remained knew something had to be done. They had to save the dragons or doom the world. They decided to send his daughter to another world and seal her dragon within an egg in order to protect him from Adina--especially since he was considered to be the most important dragon within the world. This wasn't because they believed when everything was said and done that he was going to be the last, but because he was their king and the only one whom could revive the dragon race. While the king's mother and Mikha'il's daughter performed the ritual that would send his daughter to another realm and seal her dragon within an egg, Mikha and his dragon distracted Adina. It was here that his dragon would meet her end. She had warned Mikha'il that this was likely be the outcome, but he had not been prepared for it--especially not Adina's reaction towards it.
She began to scream at the corpse of Mikha's dragon, demanding she come back because she couldn't leave him like this. Both dragons and dragon blessed are known to fall into a kind of madness at the loss of their counterparts, and when it became clear that his dragon wasn't going to obey her command she decided to lock Mikha'il up. However, after he escaped countless times, Adina decided to turn him into stone. She kept him near her at all times because while he couldn't move he could talk. He doesn't know how long he remained at her side nor does he know why it ended. He just know that he was left to collect dust while Adina chased man across the sea. He doesn't know how long he remained here, but eventually he was discovered by those whom were thrilled beyond belief over a talking statue--especially one whom had knowledge about ancient times. There wasn't much known about the time of Valyria, and they believed Mikha'il was the key to their questions. They, however, quickly discovered he wasn't so eager to answer them.
Over time he found himself passing from one person to another--each believing they could convince him to reveal what he refused to. Eventually, he just started to pass to those whom saw owning a talking statue as the greatest status symbol until once again he found himself forgotten within the basement of some noble's estate.
Present
When one is a statue the passage of time has no meaning. It could have been a hundred years or a thousand before this little girl had found him stored away within her family's estate. What he did know was she was different than the others whom had stumbled upon him over the ages. While she did find the talking statue fascinating, she did not see it as a tool to be used. And while she wished to hear about the path, it was out of empathy for Mikha'il. They formed a friendship, and the girl promised him that she would release him from his imprisonment. It was a promise he didn't think she would be able to keep, but he appreciated the thought nonetheless. The young girl began to study ancient magics, and gained the reputation of being a powerful witch. She used this reputation to help people, and eventually opened a school of magic that taught those whom found themselves drowning within modern style of magics how to use their talents.
Over the years, the girl never forgot her promise until one day he found himself living breathing flesh once again. He doesn't know if it was his friend whom freed him, or something else at play. What he does know how numb he been while within the stone state, and he found himself being overwhelmed by all the emotions he was incapable of feeling while a statue. He begged his friend to turn hum back because he feared he would be driven mad by the onslaught of emotions, but she refused. Instead, she helped him ride them out. He can't say he left the experience unscathed, but he isn't as damage as he could have been. Emotions are still sometimes hard for him. He doesn't know if it is because he is a dragon blessed without his dragon or all those eons being sealed within a stone state. What he does know is that if they become overwhelming that his friend will help him ride them out, and he fears what will become of him if anything happened her. Thus making him a tad overprotective of her.
